Introduction
Imagine life as a Ferris wheel at a carnival. We board it hoping to enjoy the view from the top, yet inevitably we must come down again. This metaphor extends far beyond temporary amusement rides and cuts to the core of our existential reality.
The Eternal Dilemma
According to Vedic teachings, the true essence of the spirit soul is defined by three qualities: eternal (sat), full of knowledge (cit), and blissful (ananda). Contrastingly, the body is transient, ignorant, and filled with suffering. This stark incompatibility means the soul never finds true happiness within the temporary confines of the body. As a result, we are caught in an endless cycle of birth, old age, disease, and death.
This perpetual struggle has been eloquently captured by the philosopher Shankaracarya, who lamented the soul’s repeated torment in his poignant verses: “Punar api jananam punar api maranam, punar api janani jatare sayanam iha samsare bahu dustare kripaya pare pahi murare.” This translates to a heartfelt plea to Lord Krishna, beseeching Him to deliver us from this relentless cycle of birth and death.
The Ferris Wheel of Life
Just as a Ferris wheel carries its passengers up and down, the soul too ascends and descends through various forms of life—from the lows of a dog's body to the highs of human existence—based on past desires and actions. This samsaric journey is fraught with temporary joys and inevitable sufferings, with no permanent respite in sight.
Path to Liberation
True liberation does not come from reaching the highest point of the Ferris wheel but from stepping off it entirely. The exit from this cyclic existence is achieved not through material gains or sensory pleasures but through the purification and surrender of the soul to the divine. Embracing spirituality and devoting ourselves to the divine can align our eternal soul with its true nature, thereby breaking the cycle of rebirth.
